When you choose to get baptized, you're doing a number of things:

1. Following Jesus' example (Matthew 3:13-17)
2. Obeying Jesus' command (Mark 16:16)
3. Representing Jesus' death and resurrection, and simultaneously, the death of your old self and you being raised to new life in Christ. Romans 6:3-4 says, "Don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ Jesus raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."
4. Going public with your faith!
